Description
Clinical Use
GDT Hemosponge Hemostatic Sponge With Iodoform is an absorbable antiseptic collagen sponge developed for the treatment and prevention of inflammatory complications in surgical dentistry and periodontics. It is intended for use after tooth extraction, especially in cases involving alveolitis, periodontal abscesses, and periodontal pocket filling following local anti-inflammatory therapy or curettage.
Composition and Action
The sponge is made from lyophilized collagen and contains hemostatic components that act across different stages of blood coagulation to help stop capillary bleeding. It also includes lidocaine for local anesthetic support. In addition, the iodoform content releases iodine on contact with living tissues, providing antimicrobial activity while supporting granulation tissue formation and contributing astringent and anti inflammatory effects.
Healing and Resorption
GDT Hemosponge With Iodoform is designed to support tissue regeneration during healing without local irritation or biotoxic effect. It does not require removal by the clinician and is fully absorbed within a few days, making it a practical option for post extraction and periodontal site management.
Direction for Use
After tooth extraction, the socket should first be cleaned to remove granulation tissue, infected tissue, or bone fragments. One sponge cube can then be placed into the socket with tweezers, followed by a dry tampon on top. In traumatic extractions, the sponge may also be sutured in place. In periodontal applications, the sponge is placed into the prepared defect or pocket after mechanical treatment, where it helps promote blood clot formation, reduce inflammation, support wound healing, and help prevent infection from penetrating into the bone.
